Mobile Lost

Dear friends,

I feel compelled to share my recent experience regarding the theft of my mobile phone at the Tirupati RTC Bus Stand on 19.5.2024.

My hope is that - this narrative will serve as a cautionary tale, helping you avoid the mistakes I made and providing guidance in case you ever find yourself in a similar situation.

1. Incident Description

On that fateful morning, I was at the Tirupati RTC Bus Stand, amidst a bustling crowd. As I hurriedly boarded a bus, my "OnePlus" phone was stolen from my shirt’s front pocket. The rush was intense, and in the chaos, someone deftly swiped my mobile. It was only after purchasing my bus ticket that I realized my phone was missing. Unfortunately, by then, the bus had already departed.

I approached the conductor, hoping to cancel my ticket and report the theft. However, the automated ticketing system left no room for cancellations due to the heavy rush. Frustrated but determined, my family members and I alighted from the bus and took an auto-rickshaw back to the RTC Bus Stand.

At the police booth within the bus stand premises, I shared the details of my missing phone with the staff. They advised me to send a message to the WhatsApp number 9490617873 to initiate a complaint. I promptly messaged “Hi,” expecting further instructions. To my dismay, the link provided in the response failed to activate despite several attempts. We decided to try again later.

2. Blocking My Mobile Number

To prevent any misuse, I took the following steps to block my mobile number:

  • Phone Call to BSNL Customer Care (9440024365):
    • I contacted BSNL’s customer care and requested them to block/deactivate my mobile number 9491135998.
  • Email to cmdcomplaints@bsnl.co.in:
    • Formally, I emailed BSNL, urging them to block/deactivate the same mobile number.

3. Lodging an Online Complaint

Since the WhatsApp link remained unresponsive on my mobile, I turned to my laptop. On 19.5.2024 afternoon, I lodged an online complaint via the TIRUPATI POLICE – MOBILE HUNT portal. Armed with screenshots containing my mobile’s IMEI number, model details, and other relevant information (which I had wisely saved in an email), I completed the necessary formalities.

Eventually, I received confirmation that my complaint had been received.

4. Obtaining a Duplicate SIM

On 20.5.2024, I visited the BSNL office in Tirupati. For a nominal fee of Rs. 50, I obtained a duplicate SIM card. After inserting it into another mobile device, I activated the new SIM. However, I discovered that several contact numbers were missing due to the SIM change.

5. Lessons Learned

From this ordeal, I gleaned valuable lessons:

  1. Pocket Placement Matters:

    • It’s wiser to keep your mobile in a side pocket or your pants pocket rather than the front pocket of your shirt. This simple change can enhance your phone’s safety significantly.
  2. Preserve Essential Information:

    • Safeguard essential details such as your mobile’s IMEI number, purchase bill, and other relevant information. Store soft copies in your email or another secure location for easy retrieval when needed. Hard copies are equally important.

Remember, vigilance and preparedness can make all the difference when faced with unexpected situations.

Let my experience serve as a reminder to protect your mobile devices and stay informed.

Stay safe!

Sincerely yours,
Abdul Naseer.
